Early Counting

Many young learners will begin by reciting the names of numbers before they understand fully what they mean. They may even be introduced to the symbols for number. It is common practice to use rhyme and songs to introduce the idea of counting and whilst these may be useful to help learn the names in order there's more to counting than you might first think.

Capacitarpais has produced a series of on-line books. They are aimed at developing counting and numbers sense and can be accessed via these links.

Numberblocks

The Numberblocks series of animated programmes feature early counting skills and is an excellent example of how the development of number concepts can be fun!

BBC Numberblocks episodes are available on DVD in two volumes from a number of on-line retailers. A few episodes are periodically available in rotation on the BBC iPlayer and more materials are available on the CBeebies Numberblocks page.

Introducing the number line

The number line is used extensively in Primary Mathematics and so early counting can act as a prelude to this by counting items and lining them up either horizontally or vertically. Playing games that involve learners moving pieces is also great experience of using number at this foundation stage of learning.
